UCSC terrorist attacks

Usually, terrorists tend to be right-wing wackos (religious fundamentalists, ex military nuts like Timothy McVeigh, or pro-lifers), but every now and then the leftwing terrorists can be just as violent. A few months ago, animal rights extremists in Santa Cruz broke into a biology professor's house and threatened his family. Last weekend, they got even more violent and firebombed a professor's house, and simultaneously blew up another professor's car. The professor whose house was set on fire was inside with his family, and was injured while escaping out the fire exit... after which he had to go to the hospital and wear crutches for several days. Fortunately, nobody was killed.

Two recent articles on the recent bombings... pretty scary stuff:

On Monday, there was a counter-protest against the extremists to show support for the victims and their families. A $50,000 reward has been announced for the capture of the terrorists responsible.

I'm all for treating animals better, but this is just ridiculous. The most frightening part is that the Animal Liberation Front is officially condoning the attacks, saying they were a "necessary" action against animal abuse.

I believe this is standard fare for the ALF, though maybe I'm confusing them with the Earth Liberation Front. It really is awful how there is this violent strand in some parts of the environmentalist and animal rights movements, and especially how they sometimes connect to anti-science strands too.

I had heard ALF was pretty bad, but I had never actually read direct quotes from them like this before. Maybe they're always that bad. So fucked up... they are reallly pushing the boundary of free speech, by making all of the vague threats they do but deliberately trying not to make specific enough threats to be arrested.

Tomothy McVeigh was a right-wing (ex military) gun nut. He was a member of the Republican party and the NRA, and spent a lot of his time at gun shows and going around passing out gun rights literature:

That's why I listed him above in my examples of typical rightwing terrorists. The Unabomber, on the other hand, would be an example of a leftwing terrorist. As well as the animal activists and eco terrorists. I guess there are plenty of both, but my impression is that if you add it all up, there's still a lot more rightwing terrorists than left.
