politics

I hate politics, but I think selectsmart.com is a pretty cool way of comparing your personal ideology with the various presidential candidates. I took this a while ago, but never got around to posting it. According to selectsmart, here is my ordered preference of the 2004 candidates:

http://www.selectsmart.com/PRESIDENT/president.php

1. Your ideal theoretical candidate. (100%)
2. Badnarik, Michael - Libertarian (81%)
3. Dean, Gov. Howard, VT - Democrat (63%)
4. Sharpton, Reverend Al - Democrat (60%)
5. Cobb, David - Green Party (55%)
6. Nader, Ralph - Independent (55%)
7. Clark, Retired General Wesley K., AR - Democrat (48%)
8. Kucinich, Rep. Dennis, OH - Democrat (48%)
9. Brown, Walt - Socialist Party (45%)
10. Kerry, Senator John, MA - Democrat (44%)
11. Moseley-Braun, Former Senator Carol, IL - Democrat (43%)
12. Edwards, Senator John, NC - Democrat (39%)
13. Lieberman, Senator Joe, CT - Democrat (35%)
14. Gephardt, Rep. Dick, MO - Democrat (35%)
15. LaRouche, Lyndon H. Jr. - Democrat (33%)
16. Peroutka, Michael - Constitution Party (29%)
17. Bush, President George W. - Republican (28%)
18. Hagelin, Dr. John - Natural Law (20%)

I feel like this captures fairly accurately my intuitions on how good each of the candidates would be for our country if they got elected. Some of them, for instance the socialist candidate, I'd probably rank a lot lower if I got to pick by hand... but maybe it just means that the candidates ranking even lower (cough Bush, cough Kerry) are worse than I thought! Sadly, the only particle physicist on the list is John Hagelin--a complete lunatic from what I hear.

In more "close to home" politics, I dove in the middle of a fight between two professors today on a department-wide mailing list--this will either blacklist me from half the department, or heroize me to half the department--most likely, both!

I don't think I could answer any of those multiple choice questions. Often none of them make sense to me. *shrug*

Which two professors were flaming each other?

I cut out all the people not actually running:

1. Your ideal theoretical candidate. (100%)
2. Cobb, David - Green Party (94%)
3. Nader, Ralph - Independent (90%)
4. Brown, Walt - Socialist Party (84%)
5. Kerry, Senator John, MA - Democrat (67%)
6. Badnarik, Michael - Libertarian (35%)
7. Peroutka, Michael - Constitution Party (20%)
8. Bush, President George W. - Republican (7%)

I would have guessed that 4 would be ahead of 2 & 3, but I guess no real surprises, here.
