Santa Cruz Futurists

A few of us met today and drafted a mission statement, chose a name, and set up some of the organization for our new club. It was going to be a transhumanist club, but unlike Stanford's explicitly transhumanist club, we decided to name it "Santa Cruz Futurists" and word our mission statement in such a way that it has less of an explicit agenda and more focus on discussion (similar to Future Salon). This will help to build membership at the outset, and then later on by a 2/3 majority vote we can amend it if we want to be more "activist" or obtain sponsorship with various groups such as the World Transhumanist Association or the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence (which I recently realized was co-founded by a guy go4thnx and I used to know in Atlanta--Brian Atkins--he was an Angel investor in the startup company we were involved with at the time, cool guy) that might be able to lend support and increase our chances of getting good speakers to visit.

Here is our mission statement as it stands (carefully worded after a lot of rewrites):

Santa Cruz Futurists

We plan to discuss emerging technologies which will shape the future of the world. This will include the effects of accelerating change and the convergence of cybernetics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, biotechnology and their implications for society. We will explore the ethical use of technology to expand human capabilities and the merging of biological and non-biological intelligence.

If you live in Santa Cruz, and you're interested in joining (whether you're on my friends list or not), or at least being informed about our meetings in case you want to show up, just comment and I'll add you to our mailing list.

And now... off to Serenity!

Sure, I'll put you on the list. Although I maybe should make two separate lists. Right now it is only a handful of us emailing back and forth, so it may take a month just to get things started... but if you want to help us get it set up we'll probably meet again (very informally) to discuss things further. It was really only 3 of us who met on Friday (a few others were going to come but didn't make it) and then 5 or 6 people who have told us they'd be interested in coming once it starts. We haven't started advertising anything publically (aside from this lj post if that counts), so I'm sure there will be a lot more interest once we do.

Whoa that's cool as hell. Please keep me informed about any plans/projects/manifestos you guys have in the works.

btw, I don't know if you've seen him before but Stelarc is the guy I was trying to talk about who's from Australia and has done the extra ear and hexapod projects, among other work. Pretty cool!

no, I hadn't seen him... thanks! I am particularly drooling over this 6-legged exoskeleton walking machine he made... sweet!

I've always sort of wanted to try "suspension", which he also has some pictures of... although I'd probably have to see someone else do it in person first before I'm brave enough to try.
