west coast represent...

well, here I am.

I have been here since Monday eve, but the phone company still hasn't gotten my phone working. It took me several days of arguing with them and them telling me it was already set up to convince them that it wasn't. Then when they finally said "oh... you mean your street number isn't 95060? That's your zipcode?" they said it would take until *next* Monday for them to try it again (at the correct address). How they thought someone would have a 5-digit street number is beyond me! So I'm not expecting them to start on DSL any time soon. All my cellphone minutes are already used up by now (mostly from calling the phone company) but at least I can use the UCSC library computers once in a while to check email. I just started catching up on lj.

I took some killer pictures of the sky & mountains during my drive out here--I imported them into my computer last night. But I'll have to wait until I have DSL or at least dialup to post them. Visited a lot of friends on the way and had a generally good time. Things went mostly as planned.

Santa Cruz is even cooler than I imagined. The people here are very... I don't know what the right word is, the first thing that comes to mind is... alive! And I'm in the perfect location, I can walk to just about anywhere I'd want to go from here. And students can ride the Metro for free. I might sell my car. The only reason I'd need it is if I wanted to take day-trips into San Francisco or elsewhere.

There is a store here called SuperStrings that rules. It's run by a kind old woman and is filled with science toys, t-shirts, games, learning-tools, telescopes, microscopes, etc. Again, within walking distance. There's another store nearby called "La Playa". With several of my lj friends discussing burning man recently, I am wondering if it has anything to do with the playa in black rock city. Probably not... funny how when you learn a new word you start seeing it everywhere.

I can't wait till school starts. Everything is going to rock.

welcome to the hood! Going to be up in da bay next week, sadly no time due to the conference and all but I'll be by again, maybe hookup for dinner or juggling or something.

My parents are going to be visiting this week, so it's probably not the best time. But just in case, what days will you be around? I was thinking of going to that accelerating change conference too, but then I realized it conflicted with my parents' visit. And I also realized that it costs a lot.

1. you can take the bus + bart to get to sf. you wouldn't want to drive once you're in the city anyway. especially if you drive a stick.

Really? When you say bus... what exactly do you mean? I was under the impression you couldn't get from Santa Cruz to San Francisco for less than $40 or so (one way). But maybe I missed an obvious alternative.

2. look for a street called "squid row". so silly!
3. eat at the brazilian restaurant. i can't remember the name of it, but it's yum.

I'm going to go into SF this week with my parents, so I will consider trying to find both of these. I've been there once before, but didn't notice the street name. I saw skid row in concert a month ago.

eer...both of those are in santa cruz, not sf.

oh. now that I think of it, I guess you mentioned squid row before; I didn't remember it was in a thread about santa cruz. hmm, wonder where that road is. I have some pretty good maps of this area, I'll have to look over them.

by bus i mean greyhound. it costs about $11 and takes about 2.5 hours.

ah; much cheaper than I thought. I'm surprised it's 2.5 hours since I think it's only a little over an hour driving time. It would still be a lot nicer if I had a car, but considering I pay $50/month for parking at my apartment... I should probably sell it.
