I may have done this in the past, but I'd like to encourage all of my readership to consider joining and supporting my favorite NGO, Humanity+ (formerly known as the World Transhumanist Association):

We're currently in the process of electing new board members, and I'm one of 10 candidates in the running for 6 seats. There are a lot of strong candidates this year, in part because Humanity+ has been quickly gaining momentum and more mainstream support.

So as an added bonus, if you sign up as a supporting member this week (elections close on Thurs, Jan 14), you can help vote me onto the board. Or, of course, if you can't stand my journal and want to help keep me *off* the board, I'd still encourage you to join and express your opinion :) If you're already a voting member, I'd also appreciate your vote.

I have tons of personal stuff to journal about, but all that has to wait. I just started a brand new job and am in the midst of apartment hunting, car hunting, a legal battle, moving everything both in and out of temporary housing, and lots of other logistics all packed into my first 2 weeks in the midwest. Rest assured, I'm getting things done and hopefully within a week or so should be able to start catching up on everything I've missed on lj while I've been moving from California to Illinois.

Oh no, don't become one of those people that puts ", PhD" after your name! I would have expected that this group has plenty of PhDs already (almost all of the transhumanists I know of are academics), but maybe I'm wrong.

I think I've learned my lesson on this one.

I signed the application that way figuring they would display the name that way, but after the full list of candidates came out and I was the only one who did that, I realized how stupid it looks. I guess in the back of my mind, I was thinking "what if the other people who have PhD's do it and I don't? Will I be at a disadvantage?" But now since I'm the only one, it looks horribly pretentious. Two other candidates mentioned having PhD's in their statement (and two more are working on them) but one of the ones who has one seems to be a bit of a nut.

The chairman of the board, Ben Goertzel, sent an email to all voting members exposing the guy as a nut, linking to his Russian webpage and encouraging us to translate it and read the funny things he says. It talked about things like predicting the death dates of various celebrities using "quantum psychology". Ben recommended 5 people he knew personally, and then recommended two more (one being mine) more weakly and indirectly. So if people roughly follow his recommendations (and I suspect they will, because they did seem sensible and based mostly on relevant experience) I expect to come out in 7th place, which is one slot too low to get a seat... but it could easily come out up or down 1, depending on how things go, which means I still have a decent shot.

Was actually intending to make a comment about regretting the PhD suffix in this post but forgot. Although I'm still not entirely sure whether it will cost me votes on net rather than gain me votes. I think it depends strongly on what fraction of voting members are academics. I would expect it to annoy most academics, but perhaps impress most non-academics (or at least, make my name stand out on the list a bit more). Although the primacy effect already helps with that somewhat (being at the top). I assume they listed us in order of submission, because I submitted mine fairly early, knowing that I'd be busy with moving later on.
