Found this picture on http://www.rearadmiral.com...

Why did I go to RearAdmiral.com? Because somehow I ran across the military title "Real Admiral" and thought to myself, wow that would make the most awesome name for a gay nightclub. So I was curious if there was a website for a club like that, or if not maybe I could buy the domain name and sell it to an upstart gay club.

Now I'm trying to assess whether this picture is actually just an innocent navy recruitment picture, or if it is intended to be sexual. What do you think?

Poll #1575624 Rear Admiral picture poll

Is this picture intended to be sexual?

Yes, definitely!

Speaking of innuendo, apparently this url was not intended to be sexual... (via geheimnisnacht today)

Oh, and on a somewhat tangentially related topic, I hear the House today passed an amendment to finally repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell. Congrats House, and good luck in the Senate!

[Update: hmmm, now this is interesting. Either their site changes a lot, or for some reason about an hour or two after I posted this, they took the picture off of their main page... before it was prominently displayed at the top. trackback?]

[Update to the Update: apparently their site just changes a lot. automated ad server, as someone describes in the comments. I should have realized this. Although I think it's still possible they picked the picture to go in the shuffle with intention]

Tee hee hee.

Of course, who wouldn't jump at the chance to become and Admiral of Rears? Just so long as I don't have to take care of Arrears, also.

That page is just a spam page right? It's a domain name owned by some domain name squatter who posts links on it based on what kind of search-engine referrer query terms they get hit by the most, to optimize for the ads that are posted on there...

Of course that doesn't answer anything about the main layout of that page - whoever made that spam page clearly set up a bunch of "related links" and somehow supposedly relevant pictures, and I'd like to think there was some sexual intention in that particular choice... but you never know, it might have just been luck...

Right, it's just a spam page.

So what I picture having happened is... there's two guys who own this thing, let's call them Matt and Trey. They're like "dude, we have rearadmiral.com, what should we do with it? Matt: let's make a joke site about anal sex. Trey: no, I would to make some money. Trey: joke! Matt: rich! Trey: anal sex! Matt: gold!!! ad clicks!!! Trey: hey, why can't we do both? Let's just slip in something really subtle, so that it won't affect the ad clicks, but maybe some people will get it. Matt: hmmm... that's brilliant!

Anyway, this is why I chose "Probably" and was surprised that so far, everyone else has chosen "Unlikely".

Although now, with the added knowledge that they took it down about 2 hours after I posted my link to it... I have to adjust my priors a bit since it appears they may have not realized it was sexual until I pointed it out.

Those spam pages are fully automated. They use the URL text and HTTP referrer to build all the content on the page, usually grabbing images with google image search and some other image search engines.

Oh, that explains a lot. I had always wondered why those spam type pages seemed so sloppily put together. Guess I never really thought about it.

I was sort of expecting everyone to pick either "Definitely" or "Probably", this has been educational. I guess either the image looks very different to most readers of my journal than it does to me, or most people knew better than I did about how these spam pages are put together.

Actually, I don't see anything sexual about that image.

Although you're right that "Rear Admiral" would definitely be a great name for a gay club, or at least the title of the owner of a themed club.
