a good recipe for a sugar high...

- skip lunch
- drink a 20 ounce mountain dew
- eat a heaping cup of freshly made ice-cream, with as much hershey's syrup and vanilla extract mixed in as we could stand.
- top it off by taking a "shot" of pure vanilla on a dare (which I didn't realize was 70 proof until afterwards!)

Actually, the dare was originally for a shot, but they let me get by with a capful. To anyone who is under 21, I realized this is an excellent way to buy alcohol, since as far as I know--they don't card for vanilla even though it's 70 proof. it's not the easiest thing to get down, but it's doable. Probably moreso if it were mixed with coke.

Twice while we were making the icecream, I set my mountain dew down for a while and it got a little warm. So to fix that, I poured a little of the liquid nitrogen into it to make it ice-cold again. It reminds me a lot of the scene in X2 where Iceman insta-cools Wolverine's coke... I just let it smoke for a bit and then drank it as soon as the smoke cleared. The second time we poured a little too much in and it formed a solid layer of ice on top... but it melted in a minute or two, and was refreshing to finish off in a few gulps.

This quarter has really started off well. We're starting to get into some pretty interesting material, and the professors I have are both brilliant (although one of them is not necessarily the best at explaining anything). Most importantly, I don't feel like the work involved is quite as time-killing. And TA'ing is less work because it's set up a bit differently now. I'm getting off topic though. I should save some for another entry.

These are my professors this quarter:

Sriram Shastry
Howard Haber

Haber is my temporary advisor; I'm hoping to do well in his class this quarter so I can get him as a long-term advisor. Although there are two other profs I have my eye on too, so I'm still keeping my options open.

Too bad about your trig professor sucking. You don't have any other interesting classes?

ooh Prof. Haber is looking for the Higgs particles, are those the so-called "background matter"?

A Higgs particle is a proposed particle which is supposed to give all the other particles their mass... you could think of it like molasses: it interacts with all the other particles, making it more difficult for them to move through the vacuum when they're accelerated. Which leads to the appearance of what we call "mass".

I don't think I've heard the term "background matter" so I can't comment on whether that's related. Maybe you're talking about cosmic background radiation? Not directly related, as far as I know.

nope thats what i meant...the molasses. i read this book that described the Higgs particle that way..that its like the background that everything else moves through and it mentioned the molasses analogy as well.
