it has begun...

Well that was quite a weekend. The fun part of my summer has started off with a blast. Even though all we did was work, and giggle, and talk, my preliminary experience with freedomcommunity has been delightfully positive. And I had a great time Saturday evening visiting sapience, even though it was way too brief (about 2 hours). She was very kind, and friendly, and fun, and gave me a whole bunch of burnt gothic industrial CD's full of selections from Bar Sinister in LA and other places. (Which I've been listening to non-stop since I've gotten back.) Not to mention the fabulous dinner we had, and some of the best wine I've ever tasted. (Then again, I don't drink very much wine... at least not good wine... but this kind of makes me want to start.) I even got to meet her (allegedly invisible) boyfriend, who only comes out into the sunlight with suitable coaxing. Unfortunately, I was unable to convince him to drop his work and come eat with us.

By the time I left LA, I realized I had forgotten to call ahead of time to let the people in San Diego know I was coming (none of whom I'd ever met before). Oops! :) This turned out pretty funny... I found the right house around 1am, but nobody was up and they weren't answering their phone or knocks on the door, and I wasn't even sure exactly which door it was (there were several different houses sort of packed into the same address where this one had a "1/2" in the street number, but was not labelled anywhere). But I found a small geodesic dome(*) in the backyard near one of them (after a bit of prowling), so I just threw my sleeping bag down in it and went to sleep. In the morning, I was a little paranoid someone was going to come out holding a shotgun screaming "get the hell off my property!"... but instead of the shotgun, I was welcomed with a smile and a hug. Which was a wonderful way to start off the day. :)

Both Sun & Mon morning I walked down to a coffee shop around the corner called Lestat's (vampire themed) for breakfast. Neat little place. (And exactly what I'd have named a coffee shop if I were to open one). I got to meet Reign and Jennie--the two on the right from this picture I'd been drooling over only a week or two before--in addition to lots of other fun (and hot) people. (paideia wasn't kidding!) The amazing thing is, I managed to remember pretty much everyone's name through the whole day(s). Even though I'm usually pretty bad at remembering names... this means they all made quite an impression on me, in one way or another. And considering my profile views on tribe.net have gone from 8 to 20 while I was away, perhaps I made an impression on them as well.

This was just a little itty bitty taste of Burning Man for me. Well, not really a taste, but more of a warm-up to get me thinking more about it. I'm very psyched up at this point, although I must admit it seems really weird how everything seemed to snap back to normal boring life as soon as I arrived back in Santa Cruz. I can see how it will probably be a lot more jolting after going through a whole week. The one thing I'm not looking forward to is getting by without showering for a week (or at most showering once or twice with a very small amount of water). I only went 2 days this weekend, and by the time I got back I couldn't think of anything else. Normally, sleep is my first priority (especially since I haven't been getting enough of it) but as soon as I walked in the door I dropped my bags, stripped my clothes off, and hopped in the shower. I need to get over the psychological aspects of feeling icky after I sleep in an uncomfortable place and sweat a lot, because there's gonna be a lot more dirt and heat and other discomforts on the playa to deal with.

Also, I suggest anyone who's interested in physics or philosophy (or anything in between) watch Leonard Susskind's recent talk on String Theory and the Illusion of Intelligent Design. (The lecture is very general and intended for all audiences, so no worries if you don't know very much about physics.) I openly offered to make a bet on this subject with anyone who will take me up on it (if we can figure out suitable terms for the bet). But so far there are no takers. Even though most of the current experts on the subject disagree with me at this juncture in time. (I don't find myself in this situation very often, which is why I figure it's an opportune time to make a bet.)

(*) the one we assembled on Sunday was at least 25 times bigger (volume-wise), about 30 feet in diameter.

You were in San Diego, and at my favorite coffee shop, and you didn't even tell me!?

Actually, now might be a good time to mention that I just arrived in San Francisco and I'll be around for the next week.

Re: jerkface!
Well, I did mention it in my journal a week ago (in fact I almost threw a "this means you, firmament" in there), but I suppose you needed a hand written invitation! :)

You're right, I should realize the world does not revolve around livejournal and get off my ass and email people. But if it makes you feel any better, I actually got to the point of getting wanton_adonis's phone & address (also in San Diego) and mapping it out on google, and still didn't end up visiting her due to so much else going on.

I would have loved to catch up with you--I'm sure we'd have tons to talk about--unfortunately... I don't think it's going to work, even with you in San Francisco (unless somehow you could end up in Santa Cruz tomorrow). I am flying to Florida 6am Thursday morning (for a week)... so the rest of today and tomorrow I'm going to be busy packing and trying to get everything else done that got put off because of my little jaunt down to San Diego.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if I end up down there again some time; I'll send you an email next time if I do.

Re: jerkface!
Yeah, life doesn't revolve around livejournal for sure. But I wish I'd caught that entry!

Tomorrow, I have nothing to do but check into a hotel in Redwood City. I have a rental car, but it's honestly pretty unlikely that I'll make it down to Santa Cruz to watch you pack. ;)
