summary of trip

The UCSC campus is stunningly beautiful. Not really the type you can take a picture of, but I kept wishing I had my camcorder with me. It's in the middle of a redwood forest, it kind of feels like it's a national park or something. There are wild deer that roam all over campus, I saw at least 5 or 6 of them just from walking around. They don't seem to be afraid of people either.

I thought pbrane was joking or at least exaggerating about students living in the woods, but it totally makes sense to me now. In fact, I could see doing that for a week or so if I can't immediately find housing. Not sure about the showering part though.

There are a lot of gorgeous women there (mostly undergrads though... which could get me in trouble if I'm not careful!) And a lot of hippies, which has both plusses and minuses. The official Santa Cruz haircut seems to be bleached blond dreadlocks, I can't count how many I saw on both hands. :)

When I was at Boston, it was the professors who really gave me the hard sell about how great the school was. But at UCSC, it was the students who did most of the raving about how much they liked it there. So I think that is a subtlely good sign. Plus, I got along amazingly well with the grad students there. We went out for Sushi and then all got completely drunk at a bar called the Red Room. I couldn't seem to get them to stop buying me drinks :) Apparently, Santa Cruz is one of the very few places in California where the "no smoking in bars" rule isn't enforced. Which is good, because I hate that rule--even though it's very rare that I ever smoke cigarettes these days, even while drinking.

I still haven't decided whether I want to do string theory or not, but the way I see it... Boston has only one choice and that's phenomenology, whereas UCSC offers both that and string theory. I'm disappointed that UCSC doesn't have anything in the way of Quantum Information Theory or Quantum Computing... but I think I can give that up in favor of the rest, since it's really the only point in Boston's favor. Well, that and the city, although I think I like both cities about equally--it's hard to say. I'm usually a fan of big cities, but Santa Cruz has a rare charm to it. I just wish the nearest airport were closer.

One of the grad students looks just like Destro from G.I. Joe. I always thought destro was cool.

Santa Cruz is wonderful fun...I love their mascot.
